Date
Fall 2024
Location
Overtown - Miami, FL
Located in Overtown, Miami, a neighborhood rich with history and culture, once celebrated as the "Harlem of the South," The Young Center draws inspiration from the vibrant works of artist Purvis Young and the visually stunning narratives of Hype Williams' Belly. This architectural endeavor seeks to honor Overtown's legacy while addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by its residents in the wake of widespread gentrification and displacement.
The Young Center aims to reimagine community spaces as catalysts for artistic revival, social connectivity, and cultural preservation. Unlike the commercialized transformation of nearby Wynwood, which often prioritizes profit over people, this project is designed to uplift Overtown's local community through three core programs:
Art Studios and Workshops
Dedicated to reviving Overtown's artistic spirit, this space will offer resources and opportunities for local artists and creators. By fostering creativity and providing platforms for artistic expression, the center will help counteract the displacement of artists and the erosion of cultural heritage caused by government funding cuts and dull housing projects.
Community Center
A hub for local organizations, this facility provides office spaces and meeting areas for grassroots initiatives, non-profits, and community advocates. It will serve as a collaborative environment where residents can work together to address the needs and aspirations of their neighborhood.
Affordable Residences
Designed to combat displacement, the residential component will prioritize affordable housing for longtime Overtown residents. These homes aim to preserve the community's demographic and cultural fabric, offering stability amidst the rapid changes in the surrounding urban landscape.
